D’avril 1986 à nos jours, 600 000 personnes ont été chargées de sécuriser le site de Tchernobyl. On les appelle les liquidateurs. Certains sont morts, d’autres malades. Tous reçurent une décoration figurant une goutte de sang irradiée. La réplique en plomb de cette médaille, défigurée et comme travaillée par le temps, constitue l’une des portes d’entrée sur le travail plastique que Stéfane Perraud mène autour de la question nucléaire depuis plusieurs années. En un sens, lointain, déformé, l’artiste apparaît comme l’un de ces liquidateurs — celui qui après la catastrophe, après le sarcophage, après la maladie, invente les formes et les systèmes, pour donner à voir l’invisible radiation.

Between April 1986 and the present, 600.000 people have worked to make Chernobyl safe. They are known as the “liquidators”. Some have died, others are sick. All have been awarded a medal decorated with an irradiated drop of blood. A copy of the medal in lead, disfigured and time-worn, is one of the ways into Stéfane Perraud’s artistic project, which has been exploring the nuclear question for several years now. In one distant, transmuted sense, Stéfane Perraud is himself a liquidator, coming after the catastrophe, the sarcophagus, and the sickness to invent new forms and systems to lend the invisible radiation visible form.
