Mary Louise Fuller, dite Loïe Fuller, est née à Hinsdale (Illinois), le 15 janvier 1862. Inspirée par les travaux des Curie sur le radium, elle crée un spectacle intitulé La Danse du radium. Malgré l’impossibilité technique d’utiliser la phosphorescence des sels de radium dans ses costumes de scène, elle offre aux Curie une séance privée de ses danses lumineuses.

La Radium Dance a été écrite en 1904 par Jean Schwartz pour la comédie musicale de Broadway « Piff, Paff, Pouf ». « Pouf » était parfois orthographié avec un deux « f ».
